Teje que Teje en Caracas / Knitting and crocheting in Caracas

I think it all started when I told Carmen I wanted to do a little yarn bombing in Caracas during my holidays. Carmen started working on the idea, met Karem and the yarns and hooks did their magic.

At first I thought of something small: a bollard, a tree ... but it when on… growing. People got excited, some donated yarn, people gathered in the square to knit and we ended up with a of over 7 meters long and 1.5 m high.

The day of the assembly was spectacular!. We spend about 10 hours sewing pieces together. There were all kinds of people: some I didn’t knew, some I just knew from twitter or facebook, some were excellent knitters/crocheters, some wanted to learn, some were friends who only wanted to keep us company for a while, some friends I haven´t seen in years. Our moms. Alvaro´s dad planning on how we were going to hang the piece. No one had to explain anything to anyone ... they got there and a few seconds later they knew what to do: joining, teaching, learning, enjoying themselves.

We ended up with more pieces so besides covering the wall, we covered 5 benches, the star raiklings and left “little-bombs” around the squere.

We finished at night with no light for the pictures. We came back the next morning and there was a free yoga class in the square. It was such a moving scene: over 100 people practicing yoga with our yarn bomb in the back!

I am thrilled to have been part of this collective action. In my city although I live far away. To discover that there are many knitters/crocheters  willing to share and wanting to make of Caracas a more nice, friendly, colorful place for everyone.

(one of the over 20 belated-posts)

In June (4 months ago!) Natalia, Unn and I returned to the hooks to "attack" these 6 columns. It was the I Artist Book Fair of Madrid (More than books) and they invited us to make an intervention on the entrance.

It was so nice to experienced that we just needed a little spark to get down to work and that we are like  awell-oiled machine”. In no time we crocheted/knitted the  360 squares (10x10cm) that we needed to cover the columns

There were all kinds of reactions. Some people liked them, touched them, made pictures of them. Others didn’t connect with it. Something for everyone, like life itself! ;)

This time we were able to "recover" the material ... some squares went to the other side of the ocean with me to be part of the Caracas´s intervention (I´ll tell you all about it in my next post I promise!) ... Others are still here ... in Lavapies ... maybe in a few days you´ll see them around: P

Miami Yarn

We did this yarn bomb in Miami over a month ago (remember this small preview?). It was small and simple but very emotional and exciting. We did it with family, my nephews and friends we had not seen in a long time.

Apparently in the U.S. even bollards are X-large, they are twice the size the ones back home. When Hubert sent us the measurements I thought he got it all wrong, but no…they are maxi-bollards!

We made it on the plane to Miami, while playing on the beach with Diego and while Sebastian was sleeping peacefully on my lap.

Apparently it lasted very little ... the next morning they were gone ...

Many thanks to Hubert for being our accomplice ...I hope we can make more…soon! ;)
