Mantita de meditación / Meditation blanket

Cuando empecé a leer el blog Attic24 quedé fascinada con las mantas que teje Lucy. Pero una cosa es ver su montaña de mantas y otra muy distinta hacer una yo misma. Cuando saqué la cuenta de la cantidad de "grannys squares" que necesito para cubrir la cama me espanté!. La otra opción era hacer una más pequeña para tenerla en el sofá y  "ver la tele" pero el caso es que no vemos tele (incluso la tenemos desenchufada). De repente me acordé que en octubre Alvaro y yo ibamos a hacer un curso de meditación  durante el cual no podíamos hablar y meditaríamos durante 11 horas al día. Quizás puede considerarse "trampa" pero quería darle algo a Alvaro que lo "acompañara" durante esos 10 días, algo así como un sustituto de los abrazos que no me estaba permitido darle durante esos días.Alli estaba! la excusa perfecta para hacer una manta pequeña!

When I started reading Attic24 I was fascinated with Lucy´s blankets. But when I calculated how many granny squares I needed for a blanket a got scare!. So I thought of making a smaller one, kind of a “sofa blanket” to “watch tv”, but we actually never watch tv (it’s not even plugged). Suddenly I remembered that in October Alvaro and I were going to a meditation curse during which we could not talk to each other and will have to meditate for 11 hours a day. It may be considered “cheating” but I wanted to give Alvaro something that would keep him company during those 10 days, some kind of substitute for the hugs I wasn’t allowed to give him during those days. So there it was the perfect excuse for a small blanket!

 La comencé a principios de septiembre, los primeros cuadrados los hice durante un viaje familiar a los Pirineos. Unas vueltas mientras hablabamos y cenabamos, unas vueltas en un picnic a 2000 m de altura cruzando de Torla a Gavarnie, unas vueltas en el coche, unas poquisimas vueltas antes de dormir. Creo que sólo terminé unos 3 o 4 cuadrados durante el viaje.

I started in early september during a family trip to the Pyrenees. A few rounds while we talked and had dinner, a few rounds at a picnic at 2000 m crossing from  Torla to Gavarnie, a few rounds in the car, a very few rounds before bedtime. I think I just finished about 3 or 4 squares along the way.

 Así que de vuelta a casa tenía que ponerme las pilas, me quedaba exactamente un mes para terminarla antes del curso. Como quería que fuera mitad chal/mitad manta la diseñé bastante más larga que ancha. Tiene 3 cuadrados grandes (45x45cm) rodeados de cuadrados mas pequeños (15x15cm): 9 por el lado largo y 5 por el corto. Los uní utilizando el método de Lucy de "joining as you go squares" y me gustó mucho. Escogí colores de playa (2 tonos de azul, amarillo y blanco).

So, once we got  back home I had exactly one month to finish before the course. Since I wanted to be half shawl/half blanket I designed it in a rectangular shape. It has 3 large squares (45x45cm) surrounded by smaller squares (15x15cm): 9 on the long side and 5 short side. I used Lucy´s “joining as you go squares” method and I really liked it. I choose some “beach colors” (2 shades of blue, yellow and white).

 Algo que todavía no entiendo muy bien es el proceso de bloquear las piezas. Por lo que he leído no se nota mucha diferencia cuando se bloquean piezas hechas con lana acrílica, mientras que esa diferencia es más evidente al bloquear fibras naturales (lana o algodón). Esta manta la hice con lana acrílica (todavía no me atrevo a gastarme mas dinero con las lanas buenas, siento que todavía me queda mucho por aprender antes de empezar a usarlas) asi que supongo que por eso no noté casi ninguna diferencia en la forma de los cuadrados al bloquerlos.

  
Something I´m still not familiar with is the blocking process. From what I've read you don´t notice much difference when you block pieces made with acrylic yarn, while this difference is most notable when blocking natural fibers (wool or cotton). I used acrylic yarn (I´m still not comfortable spending too much money on yarn since I´m still learning to crochet) so I guess that's why I did not notice any difference in the square´s shape after blocking it.

 Otra cosa, la hice con un ganchillo de 5mm (por desesperada para terminarla más rápido) pero creo que hubiese quedado con un mejor acabado con un ganchillo de 4mm. La lana la compré en Lanas Sixto y creo que para ser acrílica está bastante bien ( y tienen un montón de colores).

Also, I did it with a 5mm crochet hook (since I was desperate to finish it faster) but I think it would have been nicer with a 4mm crochet. The yarn is from this shop, I think that it´s pretty good for acrylic yarn (and it´s only 2 euros for 100g) and they gave it in a lot of colors.

Después de unir todos los cuadrados le hice una vuelta más a toda la manta en "granny stripe" en blanco y una última vuelta en azul oscuro: en los lados largos  hice sólo  punto bajo y en los lados cortos le hice unas pequeñas onditas. Finalmente la terminé un par de días antes del curso. Confieso que durante el curso más de una vez, abrí los ojos durante las meditaciones (trampa!) y veía de reojo a Alvaro (muy concentrado y muy serio) envuelto en su mantita y me entraban unas ganas enormes de ponerme ganchillear!!!!! y pensaba cuanto extrañaba a LUPE por supuesto (más trampa!!!) ;)

After joining all the squares together I made a round in granny stripe (white) and one last round in dark blue, in the longer sides I just did single crochet and in the short sides I did a small waves. I finished it a couple of days before the course. I confess I cheated a little bit during the course, sometimes I would open my eyes and look at Alvaro (all focused and serious) wrapped in the blanket and I thought how much I missed my hooks and yarns! and LUPE of course ;) 

Regalos/Gifts (IV): Culebrita/ Snake

En el mismo momento en que leí el post de Lucy (Attic24) "Sssss" supe que quería hacer una serpiente así. Tenía la excusa perfecta: en un par de meses vendría mi sobrino a visitarme. Creo que la empecé ese mismo día. Busqué un patrón para tener algo de referencia  (pero ahora no lo encuentro!). De nuevo utilicé la lana gorda acrílica (la misma del dinosaurio) y un ganchillo de 5mm (H-8). Para la cabeza y la cola compré el verde y de resto fuí utilizando los colores que tenía en casa combinándolos lo mejor que pude (estoy muy muy lejos de lograr la maestría en color que tiene Lucy). 

As I read Lucy´s post (Attic24) “Ssss” I knew I had to make this snake. And I had the perfect excuse: in a couple of months my nephew was coming to visit us. I think I started it that same day. I looked for a pattern to have some reference (I can´t find it right now). Again I used the same acrylic chunky yarn  and a 5mm (H-8) hook. For the head and tail I bought the green yarn and for the body I used the yarn I had home trying to combine them the best I could (I´m very,very, very far away from Lucy´s color skills).

En el camino me debo haber distraído un par de veces (o más de dos) y a veces  metía más puntos y la serpiente engordaba...me daba cuenta cuando ya llevaba unas cuantas vueltas asi que decidía no deshacer sino simplemente reducir hasta el tamaño inicial...asi pues obtuve "una serpiente boa que digería un elefante", como la de El Principito (ya se habrán dado cuanta que la perfección NO es lo mio).

On the way I got distracted a few times and ended up adding some stitches and the snake got fatter. Instead of undoing I just kept on crocheting and just decrease those new stitches…so at the end I got a "boa constrictor digesting an elephant" like the one in "The Little Prince" (by now you should know that perfection is NOT my thing!).

Al final quedó casi de mi tamaño, es decir, mide unos 1,60m!!!!. Alvaro me ayudó a dibujar la caja donde la envolvimos con carteles de "peligro!", "bicho peligroso" y cosas por el estilo. A Diego le encantó, tanto la serpiente como la caja!!!...como a todos los niños la caja le dió horas de diversión!

 It turned out to be about my height (1.60m!). Alvaro helped me decorate the box in which we wrapped it with signs like “Danger!” or “Wild thing”. Diego loved the snake and the box, of course, like all children he had hours of simple fun with the box!

Jar Jacket

Rápido, sencillo y las plantas lo adoran!!! Es el "Jar Jacket" de Attic24. Estoy segura que sin esto mi orquídea ya se habría suicidado como suelen hacerlo todas las plantas que caen en mis manos. En este enlace está el patrón.
