Afieltrando ando / Felting

Hace tiempo que tenía ganas de probar el afieltrado. Después de leer tips y consejos en varios libros y blogs (y alguna que otra prueba en casa), decidí que lo mejor era afieltrar una pieza de punto (porque al parecer mientras mas sueltito esté el tejido se afieltra mejor)…pero…como saben que no soy muy fan del punto…entonces lo hice con el telar circular.

I’ve wanted to try felting for a long time now. After reading several advice and tips on books and blogs  I decided it was to time to give it a try. From what I read I got to the conclusion that it was better to felt a knited piece rather than a crocheted one, since it is better for the felting process for the fabric to be loose…but…you know I´m not a big fan of knitting…so I made with my loom! :P

Aprovechando la ocasión probé otras cositas en el telar como tejer en recto y practiqué algunos puntos (todo realmente muuuuyyy fácil). Esta pequeña muestra la afieltré en la lavadora y por lo que ví me gustó más como se afieltraba el punto “e-warp” que el “knit” o el “purl” (me encantaría enseñarles la muestra después de afieltrada pero se escondió y no la encuentro…seguro aparecerá en el momento en el que apriete el botón de “publicar” del post…)

Since I was already on the loom I decided to try some stitches to see if they felted in different ways and also I practice a bit knitting straight instead of in the round. I felted this little piece in the washing machine and I liked more how the “e-wrap stitch” ended up (knit and purl stitches didn’t get felted really)…I really want to show the “after picture” of this gauge but… can’t find it!!!!...I’m pretty sure it will come out as soon as I press the “publish” button on this post…

Una vez decidido el punto, los colores y el diseño sólo había que tejer un rato…

Once I decided the stitch, the colors and the design I just had to knit for a while…

  
Como ven me emocioné un poco tejiendo y se me pasó la mano en el largo del bolso…pero bueno…aún así preferí no deshacer pensando que igual se iba a encoger al afieltrarlo…

As you can see I got carried away and the bag ended up longer than a usual bag…but since it was going to shrink any way I decided to leave like that instead of frogging…
 

Y efectivamente se encogió…pero claro…proporcionalmente…o sea que el bolso siguió siendo un poco largo para los estándares normales de un bolso...aún así…me parece que quedó bastante mono…(¡y todos dicen que es perfecto para llevar una botella de vino!).

And it actually shrugged a lot!...but…obviously proportionally…so the bag was still longer that it should be…I like it anyway…it’s kind of cute…and everybody says that it is perfect to carry a bottle of wine! :P

Para el afieltrado creo que me compliqué más de lo que debía: empecé haciéndolo a mano (simplemente estrujando fuerte la pieza en agua muy caliente y jabón) pero no lograba grandes avances así que decidí meterlo en la lavadora a 90ºC (tip: es bueno meterlo con un par de cosas más, una toalla, unos vaqueros, porque facilita el afieltrado al estrujarse con otras cosas). Para la próxima vez me voy directamente a la parte de la lavadora.

The felting process: I think I started the hard way wanting to do it by hand, with hot water and dishwash soap, but it didn´t work for me… so after a while I put it into the washing machine (90ºC) (tip: it is recommended to put also some clothes like a pair of jeans or a towel to get a good felted finish).

 A mi me parece que quedó de lo mas mono…la forma es un tanto extraña…pero aún asi me gusta! …para el próximo calcularé que la pieza se reduce más o menos a la mitad…a! y no hizo falta coserle forro porque el tejido queda muy denso! :P

I really liked how it turned out…it’s pretty cute…for the next time I’ll knit thinking that it will shrink to half of it size…(and it didn’t need lining since it is so tight!) ;)

Un búho a la semana / An owl a week challenge

Desde que hice los broches de búho quería retomar el tema “búho”…no se muy bien porque...será por la cantidad de búhos que veo casi a diario por internet o porque una alumna me pidió un búho…yo que sé… no importa porqué, lo importante es que he encontrado un patrón súper fácil y resultón…tanto que ahora me he planteado hacer un búho de estos a la semana…¿Por qué?...pues tampoco importa…sólo se que lo quiero hacer…una especie de mantra...divertirme combinando colores,…hasta me he pillado unos “ojos de búho” en 6060eyes!

Since I made the owl brooches I wanted to make more owls…I don´t know why…maybe it is because I see owls everywhere over the internet or maybe because a student ask me for one…it doesn’t really matter…what is important is that I found a really cute and easy pattern!...so I decided to make “an owl a week challenge”…why?... it doesn’t really matter…is like a mantra...maybe I just want to have fun combining colors…I even bought some “owl eyes” in 6060eyes!

 Este fue el primero…terminó siendo “la mascota” de una pequeña escapada de fin de semana con mis amigas…lo bautizamos “Aldatz” ( ¡como el pueblo al que fuimos a comer chuletón!)

This is the first one. Last weekend I made a little trip with my friends and this owl ended up being our “mascot”. It is called “Aldatz” as the town we went.

 Y al final lo rifé y se ha ido a casa con Ana.

And at the end I made a raffle and it went home with my good friend Ana.

¿De que color será el próximo?... ¿se lo regalaré a alguien?...¿terminaré loca y sepultada en búhos?...solo hay una manera de averiguarlo…haciéndolos! :P

What color will be next one? ... would I give it to someone?...would I end up crazy and buried in amigurumi owls?...there´s only one way to know…making them! ;) 

Bombardeando cuellos / Cowls&Loom

Creo que los cuellos son lo más sencillo y básico que se puede hacer con los telares circulares (loom knitting). Todos estos están hechos con el punto “e-wrap” (lo siento todo lo que he leído de los telares está en inglés y no sé como se le dirá en castellano).En fin, que solo les puedo decir que tengan muuuchooo cuidado porque son un vicio…tanto que me he lastimado la muñeca de tanto darle al telarcito…pero ya voy mejorando…pronto volveré a ellos…

I think cowls are the simplest thing you can make with loom knitting. All of these are made using the “e-wrap stitch”. I must warn you: thay are verryyyy addictive!...is so easy to make them that you just can stop…I even hurt my wrist from sooo much loom knitting…it is almost ok now…soon all be back to the loom!

pero a las semanas lo perdió…asi que tuve que hacerle otro…

But he lost it so had to meke him another one…

Luego uno blanquito para mi (¡con pompones gigantes incluídos!…y cuando lo estaba acabando una mujer con ojo de pez lo vió y me pidió que le hiciera uno…y es bien sabido que uno no puede negarse a estas cosas…

Then an all-white for me (with huge pompoms!)…and when I was about ti finish it my friend Susana ask me to knit one for her…I you…you can never say no to this things…

no…¡es broma!...esto fue haciendo un bolardo…da la casualidad que el telar pequeño es justo del tamaño de mis bolardos…si del cielo te caen limones…

no….just kidding…this was actually a bollard…a happy coincidence: the small loom is just the size of the bollards on my street… 

Hilando vengo / Our first skein

Era apenas 3 de enero y ya estábamos con las manos en la lana. Comenzamos el año haciendo este magnífico taller de hilado con Lala de Indigo Estudio Textil. 100% recomendable. Aprendimos un montón, terminamos con agujetas de tanto cardar y logramos hilar nuestro primer ovillo!

It was only January 3rd and we already had our hands on the wool. We started the year doing this wonderful workshop with Lala from  Indigo Estudio Textil. I recommend it 100%.We learned a lot, we “combed” a lot of wool and we spun our first skein!

A Alvaro se le dió fenomenal…logró hacer un hilo precioso y muy delgadito…se veía tan relajado en la rueca!...a mi me costó un poco más…eso de llevar un ritmo con las manos y otro con los pies me cuesta muchísimo…pero bueno es cuestión de práctica…como todo…mientras seguimos practicando con el huso…Alvaro está convencido de que va a construir una “rueca frankenstein” con una rueda de bici…espero que lo logre…

Alvaro did a great job…he managed to make a beautiful and very thin thread ...and he looked so relaxed on the wheel!...for me it was a bit harder…I guess I just need to practice more…Alvaro says he is going to build a “Frankenstein-spinning wheel” with a bike wheel…I hope he can make it!

Estos 2 ovillos son el resultado de dos días de taller…decidí que tenía que tejer algo con ello…y me decidí por un cuello…Primero intenté con ganchillo pero quedaba muy tieso…

This two balls are the result of a two-day workshop ... I decided I needed to knit something with it ... a cowl seemed like a good idea…I first tried to crochet it but it turn out to stiff…

  
Asi que lo deshice y lo tejí con el telar circular…y asi si logré un cuello super calentito y suave!...con lana cardada e hilada por nosotros mismos!!!! 

So a ripped it and give it a tried with the loom and it worked like a charm!...it is so soft, so warm…so special… 

 PD: esto de los cuellos con los telares circulares es mi nuevo vicio...tanto que me he "lesionado" la muñeca de tanto tejer...pronto les muestro algunos de los cuellos que he hecho..

PS: making this cowls with the circular loom is my new addiction...so much that I "injured" my wrist from so much loom knitting...soon I´ll show you some of them... 

 

Plantas a prueba de mi / Amigurumi cactus

Hay cosas que piden que los pruebes. Empiezan a salir fotos por todas partes (pinterest, facebook, blogs, etc.). Eso fue lo que me pasó con los cactus. Asi que al final probé estos patrones y me gustaron bastante. Cada uno está hecho con un hilo diferente pero todos de acrílico y con un ganchillo de 4mm.

There are some things that beg you to make them. You start looking at pictures of them everywhere  (pinterest, facebook, blogs, etc.). That´s what happended to me with this amigurumi cactus. After a little research I tried this patterns and liked them very much. Each cactus is made with a different acrylic yarn, all with a 4mm hook.

En fin que recomiendo estos patrones para hacerlos con cualquier tipo de hilo...me parece que quedan muy monos y hacen un bonito regalo!

In short, I recomend this pattern, you can make them with any yarn and hook you want. They are pretty cute and I think they make great gifts!
